Building a Habit

http://www.dreamstime.com/-image22034302 I’ve lost the blogging habit over the last year or so, and I’ve been thinking about that a lot. I used to love keeping up with regular blog posts, and I’m not sure why that started to slip. Probably the “instant gratification” of Twitter has something to do with it… but I’m sure that can’t be the only factor.

So I am committing to regular blogging again. Because I know that if I set my goals too high I’ll freak out, miss a day, and then procrastinate myself into a pit of despair over my inability to meet goals (not that I’m being dramatic or anything), my commitment will be to post here three times a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Every week.

I have no idea what I’ll be talking about yet, and I’m sure some entries will be short and sweet, but I’ll do my best to keep it up. I think I will try to post in the mornings, before I settle into writing for the day, but I’m not going to beat myself up if I don’t stick to that. (It’s almost lunchtime now, and I’m only just writing this!) I expect there will be lots of talk about what I’m reading, along with some giveaways; a bit about writing, creativity, all that; TV and movies; along with whatever else springs to mind on the day that I sit down to write. I’ll keep promo to a minimum (but I tend to do that, anyway), unless I have a book coming out… in which case I expect I’ll just have to mention it. ;)

But seriously, I’ve missed this space and want to start using it more. I love Twitter for its immediacy, brevity, and sense of connection. As Colson Whitehead famously said, “it’s nice to have a little company during the long workday.” I agree with that! But it’s also quite ephemeral, transitory. Things scroll past super fast and just… disappear. (Well, unless you ‘favourite’ them which bookmarks the tweet you want to refer back to later.) With a blog, there’s a more permanent record and I’ve been missing that lately. So, Twitter will continue to be my water cooler, while this blog will be my 3-times-a-week journal. Except with a handful of people reading over my shoulder.

Please bear with me while I get back into the blogging habit, and I’ll see you on Wednesday!

Kaz

Just to be fair, back when you were blogging regularly you didn’t have things like contracts with deadlines to worry about. But it’ll be good to see you around more frequently again, if it does work out.

Would be great to see you blogging more (I can’t talk about a time before you had contracts and deadline, since I didn’t know you back then) but I do love your blogs! They almost always inspire me to continue doing whatever I was doing and you make me laugh quite a lot. :-)
