Want To Win a Six Pack?

I’m not talking about this kind of six pack, I’m afraid:

Or even this:

(Mmmm… Guinness…)

I’m giving away a six pack of comics. Brand new, all #1 issues from the recent DC relaunch.

ONE WINNER will get their grubby little hands on the six comics that I enjoyed most from the first 52 titles released – and yes, I have read all of the comics from the ‘New 52’.* The prize pack will consist of:

Wonder Woman #1, Batwoman #1, Batman #1, Animal Man #1 (you’ll actually get the 2nd printing of this one, which has a slightly different cover), Birds of Prey #1, and Justice League Dark #1.

(So, that’s two ‘Woman’ titles; two ‘Man’ titles; and two team books. I’m an equal opportunities comic book giver!)

“Why are you doing this giveaway, Kaz?” you might ask.**

Apart from being (slightly) crazy, I just want to share the comics love. Help my fellow human beings get their geek on. Drive someone else to start frequenting their LCS.*** Honestly, I’ve made no secret of how much I love comics, and how they’ve sort of shaped a huge part of my life reading material during the past 30 years. Well, now I’m giving something back. To you! Aren’t you lucky? 😉

There were of course some other good DC comics released over the past month, along with plenty of cool comics from other publishers – but they weren’t all doing relaunches and new first issues. There have also been some pretty terrible comics in DC’s ‘New 52’ (again, just my very humble opinion as a lifelong nerd reader of the medium). But I picked the six titles that I personally enjoyed the most, while also trying to include stuff that my blog readers might enjoy – the two lists were pretty much the same, so it worked out pretty well. If you like urban fantasy novels and mythology, I honestly think you’ll enjoy some – if not all – of these comics.

TO ENTER:

Leave me a comment telling me what comics you’ve read and enjoyed, either in the past or currently. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never read these kinds of comics before – you can still enter. In that case, just tell me why you’d like to win. Or something. Whatever, let’s talk comics! The giveaway will close end of the day Friday, October 14th and is open to all no matter where you live. I’ll announce the winner of the 6 issues soon after.

ETA: I’ve extended the closing date by a couple of days as more people seem to be discovering the giveaway a bit late.

*Apart from any of the Green Lantern titles. What? Don’t look at me like that. I’ve never been a fan of Green Lantern… Sorry.
**Okay, you might not.

  1. Hey Karen: I grew up reading DC comics, my favorites being Superman, Batman, and the Justice League. So naturally I am curious about the New 52 reboots of these and the other characters from the DC Universe. Your give-away opportunity provides just what I need to discover or re-discover what I originally loved about these comics and characters. I currently follow things like Hellboy, BPRD, and The Walking Dead, among various others.

  3. I’ve never really given Superhero comics much of a try for some reason, though I would like to someday. I have enjoyed comics such as The Sandman, Lucifer, Hellblazer, Transmetropolitan, Strangers in Paradise, and Preacher…as well as several titles.

  4. With only a few exceptions, primarily IRON MAN and THOR, most of my pull list is comprised of non-supe titles. Being a man of a certain age, I’ve tired of “tights and fights.” The comics I have enjoyed the most (or currently read) include the following:

    CASANOVA
    SWEET TOOTH
    DAYTRIPPER
    SIXTH GUN
    BALTIMORE
    MEN OF WAR
    UNKNOWN SOLDIER

Of the events, I’ve actually enjoyed FEAR ITSELF quite a bit, which surprised me. Pleasantly.

As a youngster, I cut my comics teeth on DC (Superman, Batman, Hawkman, Justice League) and Gold Key, (Doctor Solar, Magnus and Turok) as well as funny animal and Casper comics. It wasn’t until college that I appreciated Marvel titles. After a long hiatus, I’ve returned to comics but with a wider spectrum in my choices.

I’ve not read the new 52 for no particular reason. Perhaps I need to correct that.

  5. Oh, fantastic giveaway! 🙂 I always love hearing your enthusiasm when it comes to comics. 😉

Anyway, I’ve read a BUNCH of the Tin Tin comics, I don’t know if you’ve heard of those, but when I was a bit younger (I still love them today) I read those all the time, and they’re hilarious!! You should check them out, even though I think they are very different from the kind you’re giving away.

I’d love to enter because I want to try out something new and see what the obsession is all about!!

(I had a 104 fever last night and I had to go to the emergency room. 😛 I’m pretty much fine now — thankfully I don’t have strep throat — but I can’t go to school today. 🙁 Oh, well.)

  6. I’ve been reading manga for a long time but never really got into comic books even thought I’ve always wanted to. Maybe this is a good place to start! Thanks for the giveaway!

  7. As you know (Bob), Wonder Woman is one of my favorites. I also like X-Men and Batman, but honestly as much as I love comics and superheros I don’t read many. I already spend too much money on novels and I know if I get started on comics … well, let’s just say that as much as my kids and I love comics and reading, we also insist on having regular meals.

I’ve been reading graphic novels instead. More bang (BOFF!) for your buck. Two recent reads were Watchmen and V For Vendetta, and next on the list is The Sandman and The Dark Knight. (I’m such a Neil Gaiman fangirl.)

  8. I haven’t read many of the DC Comics or any comics really. I much prefer the graphic novels since there’s more to them and it doesn’t end at a crucial moment. *grin* Now I grew up loving the comic shows, so I’m not completely clueless, but with my son starting to get into comics, I’ve been looking at them a little more.

  9. Well, I’d have to say that back when I was reading them regularly, I was always more of a Marvel guy, particularly the X books. Closest I’ve been lately is the occasional print form of Girl Genius. But I will say I’ve been interested in the New 52.

  11. Hi! I didn’t really read comics in the past (the only comic that I read was X-men – I loved it!), but I’ve just decided to grab some and start reading them. My best friend is obsessed with them and I’ll probably go to her for comics 🙂 But I think it’s never too late to start something 🙂
So thank you for the great chance to win six comics 🙂

  12. This sounds like a seriously awesome give away…

Ok – so the only comics I’ve ever read are Donald Duck…. which is why I’d love to win. I’d love to find out what so exciting about these comics you keep talking about! And since I haven’t found a place nearby where I can buy one, well, this is probably my best shot 😉

  13. Hi Kaz. When I was a kid, I used to steal my brother’s Eagle comics (loved Dan Dare) but then followed a long fallow period… Recently I’ve been introduced to Sandman (courtesy of my brother again!) and Buffy. I’d love to try some classic superhero stuff, though!

  14. Oh, cool!
I don’t think I’ve ever read a ‘proper’ comic, although I have been wanting to for a while (I’ve read and enjoyed some graphic novels). But every time I go to the comic section, I freeze, and I’m completely intimidated. Why, you may ask? Because I know how to buy books–I know how to tell the ones I’m most likely to enjoy from the ones I probably won’t. But comics are harder to pick out, because there are so many and I have no idea how to go about choosing one.
I think now I’ll just look at the ones you said you enjoyed, and start from there. 🙂 Thank you!

  15. I’ve been a Spiderman and Cloak and Dagger fan since high school and I’ve started reading I, Vampire, one of the new DC 52. I pretty much will read any comic put in my hands.

  16. You don’t have to enter me, because *ahem* I have all of these, too — and unsurprisingly, my favorites align very closely to yours.

I’ll admit that I was really afraid of the reboot (and some issues have been a fail for me) but overall, I’ve mostly enjoyed the titles. The recent news about WW doesn’t make me happy, though I hope that it’s handled well enough that I don’t want to cry my way through the third issue.

  17. I am a big Wonder Woman fan have been reading her since forever! But my comic book journey all started with Betty and Veronica, and I still love them to this day! : )
Its nifty that you are trying to spread the comic book love around, and NO that does make you crazy, just copacetic! : )

  19. I have become a graphic novel/comic fan recently. Loving the Dark Swan: Stormborn and there are tons of manga I read. I have never read the traditional comics and since I love the new artwork I thought now would be a good time to try.

  20. Hi Kaz
Well, as you already know I grew up wanting to be Spider Man! I was always a Marvel guy, also loving The Hulk, Fantastic Four and Iron Man. However, things changed with the film The Crow. Suddenly I was open to a whole new world of dark romance and madness, so I quickly acquired James O’Barr’s Graphic novel. This lead to me becoming a fan of The Dark Knight himself (far better than the 60’s tv show!) I also told you of my collecting the BloodRayne comics, based loosely upon the computer game of the same name. A Dhampir, half human, half vampire, Rayne is all attitude, sexy and deadly, with a generous helping of humour too! I also think I deserve a bonus point in the very least for knowing who Dazzler is!

  21. I grew up with Marvel (X-Men for me!) and I adore all the members of the Avengers (though I might lean towards Tony Stark juuuuuuuuust a bit more than all others). I was also a fan of DC, but I wasn’t as latched on to the heroes of their world. Perhaps I like the rejects 😉 Then I found Jason Todd and it all made sense 😀 I adore him and, despite the varied complaints about his new series, I loved it because I love Jason. He does what Batman won’t. I like that.
