In Which Kaz Writes More Books

Dear lovely blog readers,

Today I can finally (FINALLY!) reveal something that I’ve been sitting on (it hasn’t been comfortable, I can tell you) for so long it has almost killed me to keep my mouth shut. Please excuse the use of ALL CAPS at random intervals, but I hope you’ll understand why I’m so excited. And loud.

Two years after her first appearance in The Eternal Kiss (with the short story, ‘Falling to Ash’), my kick-ass teen vampire Moth is getting her own series! I am BEYOND THRILLED about this. I honestly can’t even tell you how excited and grateful I am. When I first got The Call from my awesome agent, Miriam, I was buying envelopes and other Essential Stationery Items* at the local shops. There was an entire conversation where I tried not to jump up and down and laugh/cry/scream in public. I mostly succeeded. Heh.

*In other words, I was procrastinating.

From the press release (I know! A press release… about me and MY BOOKS!! Don’t worry, I couldn’t believe it either. ;)):

RHCB acquires three new novels from YA author Karen Mahoney

Random House Children’s Books is delighted to announce a three book deal with YA author Karen Mahoney. Fiction Publisher Annie Eaton and Fiction Editor Jessica Clarke secured a deal for World English Language rights for two titles in a brand new series called BEAUTIFUL GHOSTS, on behalf of Miriam Kriss at Irene Goodman, the first book of which will be published by Random House in 2012. A separate deal was made with Heather Baror of Baror International for THE STONE DEMON, the third and final book in The Iron Witch trilogy which will be published in 2013.

Annie Eaton, Fiction Publisher comments ‘Karen Mahoney is a natural storyteller with a wonderful imagination. Her debut novel, THE IRON WITCH, was published to rave reviews, and there is an eager audience out there wanting more!’

Jessica Clarke, Karen Mahoney’s Editor adds ‘Karen is a dream author, with an incredible passion for YA fiction and a huge online following on both sides of the Atlantic. Her blend of strong female protagonists and punchy paranormal drama is breathing new life into this genre, and we are very proud to have her on the RHCB list.’

THE STONE DEMON is the final book of The Iron Witch trilogy, where Donna Underwood must work with the alchemical Order of the Crow in London to create a new Philosopher’s Stone. If she fails? A three-way war between the dark elves, demons and alchemists will lead the world into an unimaginable apocalypse.

Being a vampire is for life – not just a lifestyle.
Reluctant teenage vampire Marie ‘Moth’ O’Neal infiltrates a group of Otherkin kids in Boston, teenagers who believe they are reincarnated vampires, in order to find out who or what is killing off the troubled teens… and then turning them into something truly undead with a taste for human flesh. All this while trying to stop sexy young hunter Jace Murdoch from shooting anything that doesn’t breathe – including her.

To summarise: RHCB have bought the UK rights to The Stone Demon (huzzah!) and World English rights to Beautiful Ghosts (Moth’s first novel) and a sequel. I really hope these new books do well so that I can write more in the future. Beautiful Ghosts has a tentative Summer 2012 release date, which means I’ll have two books out next year – because The Wood Queen is released Feb 2012 – and two books in 2013. I know how lucky this makes me, and I aim to work hard to make all of these books as awesome as possible. Random House are showing a lot of faith in me and it’s important that I do my best to repay them.

Wish me (and Moth!) luck… 🙂

  4. Jodie says:

COOL! The word ‘infiltrates’ is what hooked me – secret vampire spying, YES! Congratulations 🙂

PS So, I bought the VD essays book for my friends bday and have got seduced into reading it myself, which means trying to cram as many essays in by tomorrow as possible. I really enjoyed yours and think you have a great essay style, very clear and knowledgeable.

    • Kaz says:

Haha!! Yes, she totally does have to infiltrate. 😀 The Otherkin believe they are the Real Deal, when in fact they aren’t. Moth IS the Real Deal but has to pretend to be Otherkin. Um… that’s really confusing, I realise that. heh.

Thank you, so much Jodie! And thanks re. the VD essay – that’s really nice feedback. I loved writing the essay, but it was the first time I’d done something like it. (Well, since university which was centuries ago.)

Thank you VERY much! Thanks for your interest and excitement, and also for blogging about. I don’t mind at all re. the image, but would really appreciate it if you could include the copyright: Katy Coope is a friend of mine and a professional artist. I paid her to create the image for me, so it would be cool if you would include her name with it. Cheers! 🙂
