SIS 50k Writing Challenge: Week 4 Check In

Week 4, and that’s 28 days down. Can you believe that? More than halfway through our Spring into Summer Writing ‘Thing’: aiming for 50,000 words in 50 days!

Are you at 28,000 words? Did you manage to write 7k in the last 7 days? I have to say NO to both of those, but I am gradually creeping up on the goal and really hope to be ‘on target’ either next week or the week after.

As promised last week, I drew one random name from ALL the comments on that entry and the winner is:

Wendy Withers

Wendy, shoot me an email at writerkaz AT gmail DOT com and tell me which ONE of the following you’d like me to send you:

UK edition - SIGNED by the author

OR:

UK paperback (unsigned)

If you don’t want either of those, you’re very welcome to a signed copy of The Iron Witch – you can choose US or UK edition – but I absolutely won’t be offended if you’d rather have one of the above two books! 😉

So, back to the check in… How are you all getting on? Share in comments below!

Kaz progress: I went in the wrong direction with my WIP this week, and I also got caught up with all kinds of admin that took away from writing time. All told, I managed just over 6,000 words. Current total: 24,250

  1. senita says:

I pulled 3k and then my ocpd got the better of me and I restated my whole project. I’m 1k into the new version. #ihaveaproblem.

    • Isabel says:

Don’t worry, Senita! It’s fine to experiment with different projects… good luck this coming week! You’re doing well!

  2. Vick says:

Lovely book choices as prizes. Congrats Wendy!
I did better than I expected and worse than I hoped for this week with 8,300. I was hoping to have caught up more but I’m happy where I am. I’m not quite up to your 24k Kaz but hoping to get there soon!
I hope everyone else has had a good week and as ever it’s great seeing how people are going on here and twitter.
    Happy Friday everyone!
    Vick.

  3. Harriet says:

Well, nearly 3K this week. But I’m about to move house and all my attention has been on packing and sorting. I’m a little disappointed but I think I’ll benefit from having some time not worrying over writing stuff. 🙂

Yay for Wendy! 🙂 And good luck to Kaz and everyone else participating for next week. ^_^

  4. Diane says:

OK! I was aiming for 5k but ended up doing 4286, which isn’t too far off, and about double what I managed last week. I haven’t written 28k so far, but I have written 18,765 which isn’t nothing. And my WIP is now at 42,340, which is the most I’ve ever written before (it’s a total mess, but you’ve got to have it to edit it, right?)

Again, I was motivated to write more today just ‘cos I knew I’d be checking in, so thank you 🙂

    • Good effort! And congrats on making over 40K on your WIP.
      Keep it going 🙂

    • Clodagh says:

That’s good going, Diane – and great progress on the WIP overall!
I don’t think it matters how rubbish it is, once you’re getting the bones down – you can’t edit a blank page. And I bet when you read back over it you’ll find it’s not nearly as rubbish as you think.

      • Diane says:

Thanks Clodagh! That’s what I keep telling myself — just get it down, it’s just something to edit later. Hopefully it will be better than I think, or at least contain some gems. My main goal really is to write something of manuscript length, so I can get over that psychological barrier of not knowing if I can do it.

  5. Ellen says:

Total so far is 32,330 words. I suspect this was helped by yesterday’s writing binge, which led to starting and finishing a chapter in the same day. (Never happens, guys. NEVER.)

Anyway, congrats Wendy and good luck to everyone else!

  6. I’m so excited! I sent you an email to claim my winnings!

It almost makes me feel guilty about how little I wrote during the week. I’m a little over 18,000 words. I need to become more productive! Perhaps I should banish my boyfriend for a while…

    • Megha says:

Whoot! What did you choose, Wendy? ANGEL is awesome! =D I haven’t read PARANORMALCY… but ANGEL will be so worth it, if you took it!

      Congrats!

    • Kaz says:

      Haha! Banish him! 😉

I got your email. Will reply at the weekend just to confirm, etc.

      Huzzah!

    • Isabel says:

Yay youuuu!!!! 😀 😀 😀 SQUUEEE I AM READING ANGEL!!!! Come on… An UNSIGNED copy of that other book versus a SIGNED COPY OF ANGEL??? Obvious decision. CHOOSE ANGEL.

You’re doing so well! Although I support that decision… yes, banish him!!! LOL.

  7. Violet says:

I’ve only managed 4.3k and some of that was taken from notes and ideas that I’d written months ago. But it’s a valid part of the story and it works, so hey ho.

Anyway, because I got ahead of myself at the start I’m still on target with a running total of 28.3k as of today, so I’m pleased enough with that 🙂

    And congrats to Wendy 😀

  8. Cat says:

    Well done, everyone!

I wrote 14,ooo this week and stand at 36,000 for the challenge. Something tells me this can’t possibly last…

  9. Ok I am throwing in the towel, seems this just isn’t writing time for me.

    • Isabel says:

Awh, that’s too bad… I guess maybe I should do the same, but who knows, there’s obviously no way I could come anywhere NEAR the 50000 word goal, I’m going to see if I can check in next week with some stuff…. this competition is helpful. 🙂 And I love looking at everybody’s progress!!! 😀

  10. Isabel says:

I’m afraid I’m still kind of crappy right now. HOWEVER, this week, that will change… actually, I might just write today… sorry, I’m a failure, but taking this break/time to relax and PONDER my story was much needed. Thanks again to Zoe Marriott, for that amazing post that helped me to take a deep breath and move on. You rock! 😀

Doesn’t really count, but I experimented with 75 words last weekend then went off to plan and stuff… so, anyway, I think I’m ready for chapter twelve. Wish me luck. 🙂

    • I wouldn’t call it a failure. Pondering time is an important lead-up to writing time. (as long as you don’t ponder forever that is!)

    • Violet says:

      Pondering isn’t a failure, it’s essential 😉

And if it helps your writing then it doesn’t matter whether you write 75 words or 7,500. Keep on keeping on, as they say x

      • Isabel says:

Thank you, Aimee and Violet. 🙂 I appreciate it. I wanted to write yesterday night but I wasn’t able to. I really want to today, though! When I get back home from swimming and piano I’ll try… I really miss my story! 😀

  11. This week I had 7,273 if you count what I’ve done so far today. But more importantly: I finally freaking crossed the 200 page threshold.

  12. 1038 this week. I blame Netflix instant streaming and two seasons of Dexter for that! Totally fell off the writing wagon and onto the four-episodes-a-night wagon.

Total so far is 14,482. Waaaay behind the goal, but also WAY more than I’ve written in a long time. So I consider this a good thing!

    • Isabel says:

14482 is very good! Don’t worry about what you are supposed to have written by now and being behind the goal… if this is an achievement for you, then well done!!!

  13. music_lover3 says:

    Congrats to Wendy!

I only managed 3500 words this week on my rewrite (I’m writing everything from scratch, so I figure that counts), but since I was a little ahead already, I’m right where I should be, progress wise.

    Excellent progress everyone!

  14. Amber says:

I got a little over 1K done this week 🙁 I am failing miserably it seems.

  15. ParisAja13 says:

After last week’s total restart I have not gotten very far this week. Could be because I’ve been swimming in a sea of Damon Salvatore the last couple of days. Watching too many (if that’s even possible) episodes of The Vampire Diaries. Man I wish I had a deliciously bad boy like Damon in my WIP. Might have more than 1k if I did.

  16. Jani says:

I managed to do 7 035 words this week, so I’m proud of that. My total stands at 30 267 and I’m really happy with the progress. Had to make a few hard decisions regarding what I’m working on now but it’s done and I’m glad. It means I’ll be able to get more words done and hopefully finish this WIP during the challenge. I’m looking forward to it.

Congrats to everybody who added to their word counts.

  17. Ali says:

I was behind for most of last week, but I finally managed to catch up yesterday – now sitting at just over 29k and going for 30k today. I’ve been feeling very uninspired most of the time, but I’m actually enjoying what I’m writing. And I love the sense of accomlishment I get now that I’m churning out short stories after having writing nothing since NaNo!

  18. Edits just keep coming at the wrong time for me!
I got edits on a short I did for sis50K (8461 words) today, so there’s a little bump on my road to 50K.
My Muse ran away again this week, so I’m not getting any closer to my word count.
My total stands at 1705 :-/
I have a 3 week US holiday coming up in 2 weeks too, so I’d better get writing to prepare for that break.
Back to the word document I go 😀

  19. Clodagh says:

I started again on a different project this week and did 4,464 – not as much as I’d intended, but I’m quite happy with it.

  20. I hit 10,022 this week, and together with last week’s total that means my SiS50k count is 29,000 – 1k over target! Whoot! I kind of can’t believe it, and I doubt I’ll maintain it next week, but I’m really happy that I managed it for one week at least.

    • Isabel says:

Wow, yay Zoe!!! Good luck with Big Secret Project… from what I’ve seen it’s turning out to be really good. 😀

  21. Sam says:

I only wrote about 4K this week and I have no idea where all my time went. I didn’t even realise the week was over until now :L

    • Isabel says:

Same here. My reaction to this post was, “It’s FRIDAY???” *clutches head in shame*

But don’t worry — you’re doing great! Okay, that’s it, I’m going to go write. I’m sick of feeling guilty. x(

      • Isabel says:

        268 new words… not too bad. 🙂

        • Sam says:

          🙂 Well done!!!
:L the worst part was halfway through the week I somehow managed to convince myself that June came before May and so was already over, which meant all the food in my fridge was out of date *shakes head in shame*

          • Isabel says:

            Thanks. 🙂

LOL!!! Wow, poor you, I think you really need a break. Deeep breaths, my dear. 😉

Hope the writing’s going well for you. 😀

  22. Akoss says:

I barely wrote for this week, less than 2000 words I think.
I’m pretty sure I’ve hit a wall and need to plot out how to unravel all the knots that I’ve been having so much fun tying for 20143 words since we started the Sis50K.
It’s not coming easy but I won’t give up.
Congrats to everyone who checked in. Keep writing we’re only halfway. 🙂

  23. Kim says:

My total stands at 24,680 so far. It’s not been the best week for writing. Ah well. Onwards and upwards or something like that?

Great progress, everyone – and congrats Wendy! 🙂

  24. Kathleen A. says:

I switched gears last week and began working on a murder mystery for a publisher. I am now at 23K on it so almost there.
I am totally avoiding writing the battle scene in my faerie novel until I have it more solid in my head, hence the whole switching WIP’s. LOL. Once the murder mystery is done and submitted I’ll go back to the faerie novel, it’s a sequel and the first one isn’t being published until April, 2012 so I have time for the sequel although I’d like both to come out within a few months of each other. So much writing to do. So little time.

  25. JL (Jenna) says:

I’m late checking in! Mostly because I’ve not really been writing. BEA totally wiped me out last week and I’m still recovering. Also spending most of my free time reading new books. Total so far: 10,000. Way off target, but hoping to catch up this upcoming week.

  26. Sarah says:

Sorry it took so long, I’ve been busy the last few days and haven’t gotten the time to finish my WIP (yup, I’m VERY close to the end). So far in the last 4 weeks I’ve managed 32,398 words so almost 8,400 words for this week. Not my best week but I’m pretty happy, especially since it’s so close to the end now! 😀

  27. Kate says:

Ugh, been trying to get a chance to get on here since Friday 🙁

This week I managed 13500 words on the dot, which means that I now have a total of 35986 words AND I have finished the first draft of my novel *excited squeal* Still buzzing about it really…

I’m now working on outlining and world building for my next WIP… Hoping the extra words I’ve managed so far will give me a bit of time to work on this before diving into the first draft writing so that I can still manage the 50k in 50 days 😀

I haven’t had a chance to read everyone else’s replies, I’m going to do that tinight when my net is playing nice (hopefully) but for now I hope everyone is doing well and congratulations to Wendy!

  28. Rachel says:

I’m late for my check in and I only managed about 1000 words to report. Things aren’t looking so good for catching up. If life would just hold still for a few days, maybe I could get some work done.

    • Isabel says:

Don’t worry about it, Rachel. 🙂 It’s 1000 new words since last Friday! Think about quality versus quantity. You’re doing great. 😛

  29. catie james says:

Remember at the beginning of SIS50k how you mentioned we were free to try writing 10,000 words in 7 days, or 7,000 in 10 days? (I can’t remember which option you actually presented). Yeah – I might end up having to do that, as I spent this past week recuperating from from a flurry of family visits to the kidlets. Why all their birthdays and graduations (“graduation” for kindergarteners – WTF?!) ended up scheduled for the same week, I’ll never know. But it left me with a fried brain and grand total of 0 words written this week.

    • Don’t worry – you’re not alone! I’ve only managed 5,000 new words on my WIP so far, so I’ve got another 45,000 to cram in over the next few weeks. Ready, steady, go! ; D

  30. Nikki Egerton says:

My total stands at 21,250 or thereabouts. Nowhere near on target, but I’m really really pleased to have that much. It’s been hard going this week, I had the first 3rd and the last 3rd of the book very clear in my mind, but am a bit stuck on the middle (I’m a pantser). I may have broken through the barrier last night though and we will see how this week goes.

    • Isabel says:

The power positivity, Nikki! 😀 You’re doing great — hopefully you will get un-stuck soon! Good luck!

775 words so far this week and I think it’s going relatively well. Uh — here’s hoping, anyway. 😉 At least it’s something…

      • Nikki Egerton says:

I keep thinking I should be more annoyed at myself for not keeping up, but I’m just so glad to have what I have. The challenge is certainly helping, there was a time or two this week when I wanted to give up and move on to something else. I most likely would have done that if I didn’t have you guys to account to. Isabel I think you should count all the words of encouragement you give everyone each week too, that will add up! xxx

  31. I am SUCH a bad girl! Not only am I three days late checking in, but I don’t have any new words to report! Job applications have been kicking my butt over the past two weeks. And to make matters worse, my long dormant RSI problems have flared up again, meaning I can’t spend too long typing, writing or using a mouse. Incredibly frustrating, but I hope to get back on track by the end of this week (after a few days of rest)!
